Did you catch my last post about my one-year-old’s healthy smash cake? Well, what’s a birthday cake without a little icing? After all, every time we look through family photos one of my favorites is myself sticking my finger in the frosting of my first birthday cake. I wanted to have pictures of my little one doing the same thing! Turns out this coconut cream frosting makes the perfect icing for baby’s birthday cake.
This healthy frosting alternative is refined sugar-free (just 1 Tbsp of maple syrup and I guarantee your baby won’t even eat 1/4 of it!) and free of top allergens and sketchy ingredients! Not to mention this icing is so easy it’s almost as simple as opening a can.
Allergy Friendly Coconut Cream Frosting
I chose to make the smash cake frosting out of coconut cream. I ended up adding in a small bit of maple syrup to sweeten it just a tad.
Honestly, this low sugar option using coconut cream is just delicious. It would make a perfect frosting alternative to any kid’s birthday cake or even a dessert for adults looking for a healthier alternative. (True story: I found a few party guests eating this healthy coconut frosting off the remainder of the smash cake. And no, it wasn’t even me or my husband eating leftovers from his highchair this time. 😅)
Plus, as a bonus this coconut cream frosting is dairy free, refined sugar-free, vegan, paleo and the best part….incredibly easy. It makes a great option for when multiple food preferences and/or allergies are involved in your family.
Ingredients that make the Best Smash Cake Frosting
Okay, are you ready for the ingredients? When I say easy, I’m not kidding…
JUST 2 SIMPLE INGREDIENTS!
Coconut cream: This can be found in the same section (usually Asian) at the grocery store as canned coconut milk.
Maple Syrup: In really small quantity. Truly, you don’t want to add more than a tiny bit because the goal is to keep the icing as thick as possible. So technically this isn’t sugar-free, but it is very LOW sugar frosting.
How to make Healthy Coconut Frosting for Baby
This coconut cream frosting is not tricky. However, it is really, really important you follow the steps and only start it once the coconut cream is cold as follows:
- Start with cold coconut cream which will help it be more set and solid. Allow extra time to put it in the freezer or fridge.
- Once left in the freezer or fridge for desired time (see healthy frosting recipe card below) skim off the cream leaving behind all of the coconut milk in the bottom of the can.

This 2-ingredient healthy coconut cream frosting is the perfect frosting alternative for baby's 1st birthday smash cake or any low sugar frosting need.
- 1 can coconut cream
- 1 Tbsp maple syrup
Place a mixing bowl in the freezer to chill.
Place canned coconut cream in fridge to chill overnight or place in freezer for a couple hours.
Remove canned coconut cream and chilled bowl from freezer/fridge.
Carefully open the canned coconut cream. The cream will be at the top of the can. Skim it off with a spoon leaving the watery coconut milk in the bottom of the can. Place the cream in the chilled bowl.
Add maple syrup to cream and beat with a hand mixer. Beat until soft peaks form, but don't allow the cream to get warm.
Keep the coconut cream frosting cool until you are ready to put it on the cake.
