Do you find yourself snacking in the evening after dinner? Perhaps you grab a bag of potato chips, take them into the couch and start munching. Or maybe you are very active and find yourself hungry after dinner and raiding your pantry for a snack. Have you ever felt like you should try not to eat after dinner? Perhaps you have heard the “don’t eat after 7pm,” rule (or some variation) and wondered if it really had any truth to it. You might be relieved to know that snacking after dinner is completely fine…if you make a healthy choice! Here are a few healthy evening snacks that can help you solve your case of the munchies while still maintaining a lifestyle of wellness.
Healthy Evening Snacks
There are several brands now selling popcorn in bags packaged like chips (name brands include Boom Chicka Pop or Skinny Pop, but there are tons of generic brands as well.) The plain/sea salt flavors usually ring in at around 35 calories per cup. You could also buy popcorn and pop it at home yourself!
2. Apple Slices with Peanut Butter
Apples can solve the crunch factor that is an essential component of late night munchies, and the fat from the peanut butter helps you to feel full for longer. This is one of my favorite evening snacks. If you think you don’t like apples, try some different varieties! Perhaps you’ve only ever tried red delicious, but would love gala, fuji or honey crisp (my favorite 😍).
3. Whole Grain Crackers and Cheese
100% whole grain crackers such as triscuits paired with cheese might give you just what you are looking for if you are craving something savory. The crackers provide a healthy dose of carbohydrates while the cheese adds a nice blend of protein and fat to satisfy your hunger.
4. Veggies with Hummus
Veggies with hummus is the perfect evening snack! Ok, so it’s the perfect anytime snack. It’s never a bad time to get in more veggies. Keep fresh veggies already cut up along with hummus on hand so that’s convenient when the munchies hit. You could also pair the veggies with one of the other snacks above such as popcorn to add a little more excitement.
