When I cook with my toddler, we mostly make these no sugar muffins, energy balls, and prep veggies and fruits together. However, I thought it would be fun to come up with a healthy toddler cookie. I wanted a recipe that both he would enjoy AND I would feel good about the ingredients. And that was the motivation behind these no sugar cookies for toddlers.
FAQ for Making Healthy Cookies for Kids
How can I make healthy oatmeal cookies?
While oats in themselves can be very healthy, many oatmeal cookies are full of sugar making them a full-fledged dessert. However, making healthy oatmeal cookies that are suitable for your toddler, baby, or even yourself (read: breakfast cookies) can certainly be done! In this particular recipe, I avoided added sugars and sweeteners including less refined sweeteners such as honey and maple syrup, which makes them more suitable for your kids and healthier for all of us! Hemp protein and flax seeds give added benefits of Omega 3s and a little extra protein. Feel free to sub the hemp protein for almond flour – I’ve made this change before it also works great!
Can these no sugar cookies for toddlers be made ahead?
Yes, these cookies can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container for a few days. You can also make and freeze these cookies in freezer bags for fast snacks when you are in a hurry.
Tips for baking healthy oatmeal cookies
- Buy pre-shredded carrots to save time.
- Let your toddler help you bake them. Involving your toddler in the kitchen helps them to develop a healthy relationship with food and learn valuable skills. (By the way, here are my favorite tips on baking with toddlers and gift ideas for foodie toddlers!!)
- Don’t forget to freeze some for later.

Toddler Cookies = Perfect Breakfast Cookie
These cookies are not just for kids. My husband and I also enjoy them and find them to be a satisfying snack or even breakfast cookie.
They are lightly sweetened (thanks to the dates), but leave you feeling good since they are not loaded with excess sugar! They are one of my toddler’s favorite ways to eat oats!
Note: My son absolutely adores these healthy oatmeal cookies. However, if you are serving them to an older kid or even an older toddler used to traditional sweets it might be best, depending on your child, to not call them cookies. They are not super sweet like most cookies, and therefore the term cookie could lead to disappointment. They will likely still enjoy them, but perhaps not under the expectation of a usual cookie.

My kids love these cookies. We make a big batch and freeze them to pull out for healthy snacks! ?
So glad your kids love this toddler cookie recipe!
These are great! We all enjoyed them!
17 mins in the oven was perfect.
The only thing I would note is that they stay in the shape that you plop them on the tray in. I did some pretty messy blobs, and my cookies turned out the same way… If I had realized, I would have flattened them and made them a little bit nicer. 🙂
Great point! I will go back and add that in as a note. Glad you loved them.
Any chance I could have a link to your applesauce recipe please?
